Ideas for Further Resources for Emerging Scholars

Though the several lists presently on this site may prove helpful, this section contains a number of additional half-baked ideas. Some of these may already exist in some form or other of which I am simple unaware. I would most certainly appreciate anyone who would like to work on developing any of these resources or adding to the list of ideas. Email Paul Corrigan.

A List of Publishers that Are Interested in Publishing (First) Books relating to the Field of Christian Spirituality

This could be a companion list for the list of journals in which scholars of spirituality publish.

Emerged Scholars willing to Work with/Guide in Some Capacity with Emerging Scholars on a Individual Basis

Perhaps this suggestion simply refers to some mechanism for assistance in networking. Perhaps it means something more involved.

An (Ethnographic?) Account of the Conventions of Scholarship within the Discipline

Many fields have developed documents that make explicit the guidelines or conventions of scholarly writing in their field—outlining things established scholars know but emerging scholars may not have found out yet. (For example, Google "writing in engineering.") Current discourse community theory suggests that direct instruction of these "rules" is helpful for individuals wishing to enter a discourse community. An emerged scholar would do quite a service to emerging scholars by writing an essay on "Writing in the Field of the Study of Spirituality." Such an essay may only be partially possible, I realize, since the discipline overlaps with others.

A Bibliography of the Field

This seems like an ambitious project, but it is not unreasonable. The discipline is not too old or too large to have a bibliography of it compiled but topic/sub-discipline. A good start, however, would be to begin a current list of articles published by members of the society (along with the list of books already being developed). Some of the works on the study of spirituality contain extensive bibliographies already. These may already serve this function, though, being in print format, they are not "searchable."

The Christian Spirituality Bulletin Made Available Online for Members of SSCS

I realize that there are some conflicting interests that could arise from this. Putting access to these articles online could compete with the volume of selected articles from the issues (Minding the Spirit) and could compete with sales of back issues. Perhaps some sort of compromise could be made. Perhaps, at the very least, the tables of contents for all of the issues could be made available.

Syllabi of Graduate Courses in the Study of Spirituality

A cache of syllabi of established scholars for their graduate courses and seminars made accessible would be useful for emerging scholars in several ways. Having access to these syllabi would help emerging scholars self-develop, discover texts to read, and develop their own courses.
